Mid-Century Madness!!
Mid-Century Madness!!
Do you ever find yourself continually postponing or procrastinating on something? For me, it's writing. Despite being an avid reader, I often hesitate when it comes to putting pen to paper (or fingers to keyboard). But today, I'm challenging myself to overcome that hesitation and give it my best shot.
Recently, I've been delving into a new design project that has captured my imagination: mid-century modern homes. It's a style that elicits strong reactions—some love it, while others can't seem to warm up to it. As I immerse myself in this aesthetic and incorporate it into my designs, I'm finding myself increasingly drawn to its vibrancy, creativity, and occasional eccentricity.
Defining "mid-century modern" is a bit like trying to pin down a moving target. Broadly speaking, it encompasses architecture, furniture, and graphic design from the middle of the 20th century, roughly spanning from 1933 to 1965 (though opinions on its precise timeline vary).
But let's get back to the design at hand. I wanted to create a space that feels youthful and contemporary yet timeless and respectful of the home's history. Since my clients have a penchant for mid-century style, we decided to incorporate elements of it while prioritizing natural materials.
One of the standout features of this design is the stunning tile I stumbled upon—it was a perfect match. Paired with custom bumped-out cabinetry and sleek, modern fixtures from Kohler Co, the space exudes a tactile, sensual quality. The encaustic tile, with its handcrafted texture, adds depth and character, while the double mirrors amplify the sense of space.
Lighting played a crucial role in maintaining the flow of the design. I opted for modern fixtures that complemented the other contemporary elements, such as the faucet and mirrors. The walnut cabinets, with their rich, straight grain, evoke a spa-like serenity that's further enhanced by the subtle contrast with the tile.
To keep the room feeling airy and open, we installed a glass shower enclosure—a decision that proved to be both practical and visually striking. And to add those finishing touches, I selected a range of fixtures from Kohler Co, each one contributing its own unique detail to the overall aesthetic.
Thanks for joining me on this design journey! I hope you found it as inspiring to read as it was for me to create. Until next time!
